Meet The Lifesavers: Monica, PUBLIC Hall

BY Kai Nicol-SchwarzOctober 21, 2020

Our spaces are open.

As tiers change across the UK and Ireland, we’ve moved into solutions mode to help our members adjust, crack on and not stop the innovation behind what they’re building.

We’ve introduced new initiatives and procedures to make sure that, if you choose to come in, you can come in with confidence. Take our amazing team of cleaners – the Lifesavers, as we call them.

They’re making sure your Huckletree Hub remains COVID-secure. Since they play such a crucial role in keeping us all safe, it’s time we got to know them better.

Introducing Monica, our Lifesaver over at PUBLIC Hall, in Westminster.

🧳 ON COMING TO LONDON… “I came to London 25 years ago, from Quito in Ecuador. I moved with my 3 children, so they could learn English. The plan was to come here for 2 years, but circumstances change all the time, and 25 years later we’re all still living here.”

👪 ON FAMILY… “I’ve got 3 children, and 10 grandchildren. They all live here in London, so I get to see them all the time.”

👶 ON GRANDCHILDREN… “I love spending time with them. We go to the park, and they get so excited to go on the underground. So we do that when I have time, but grandchildren are also very tiring!”

🍳 ON HOBBIES… “When I’m not working, I love to cook, spend time with my family, and explore London (when the weather’s nice!)”

👩‍🍳 ON COOKING… “I cook most days – mostly Latin American dishes. In Ecuador we cook with a lot of rice, cassava, bananas, and make all kinds of soup. A couple of my favourites to make are fritada (fried pork, potatoes, and salad) and prawn ceviche.”

⛪ ON CHURCH… “I’m an Evangelist Christian, and have been going to the Christian Community of London since I moved here. I used to go 3 times a week before Covid, but now the services are done over Zoom and Youtube.”

🎼 ON MUSIC… “I listen to a lot of Christian music. If you haven’t heard of them, check out Miguel Cassina, Jesus Adrian Romero, Miel San Marcos. I listen to them when I’m cooking, walking… all the time!”

💻 ON LOCKDOWN… “I moved in with my children and grandchildren, and spent lots of time on Zoom with my church community. We would pray, sing, and read the papers together. It was a really nice way to stay connected.”

🌎 ON TRAVEL… “I love to travel. I’ve been all over the place, to the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, America, Mexico, Turkey, Greece, and more!

🇺🇸 ON FLORIDA… “A few years ago I went to Miami, and it was great. The beach is amazing, and there is so much to explore.”

🇹🇷 ON TURKEY… “One of the best places I’ve been was Mamaris, in Turkey. The beach, the people, the food, and the low prices make it a fantastic place to go.”

🇪🇨 ON ECUADOR… “I grew up in the capital city, Quito, and lived there until I moved to London. Lots of tourists go to Quito, because there’s so much history in the city, from the Incas, to the Christian churches. The churches are amazing, huge buildings. Check out Church of la Compañía de Jesús, el San Francisco church and Basilica del Voto Nacional (which they’ve been building for over 300 years!) if you want to see some stunning architecture.”

🐢 ON THE DREAM HOLIDAY DESTINATION… “One day I’d love to go to the Galapagos Islands. It’s so beautiful and was right on my doorstep when I lived in Ecuador.”
